A Deeper Look
Cherie Currie and The Runaways
The Runaways were an all-girl adolescent band from the 1970s that made a substantial impression on the music industry with their loud, guitar driven punk and hard rock. The members, Cherie Currie; lead singer, Joan Jett; guitar, Sandy West; drummer, and Michael “Micki” Steele; bass, were all from the Hollywood, California area.
Cherie Currie was only 15 years old when joining the band, after her twin sister Marie turned down the offer from Jett. She recorded the band's first three releases then suddenly left the band. Currie came out to say that the manager, Kim Fowley, was abusive towards the girls trying to toughen them up for the reality of the rock and roll scene.
Currie found comfort in David Bowie and his music. She performed a dance to his song 1984 in her high school talent show and won the whole thing. When she was about 14, her sister's boyfriend raped her causing her so much pain and anger that she cut her hair like Bowie’s and tried to find a new persona the way he did. She had an undying love for him and was heartbroken when he had passed in 2016.
