A Deeper Look
Lady Gaga
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta; now known as Lady Gaga; studied music and performing arts her entire life. She was accepted into Julliard at age 11 and was granted early admission into New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, (she was one of 20 students granted early access worldwide.) Her debut album Fame (2008) was a huge success. Her song, Just Dance, was nominated for a Grammy that same year. She is also known for her bold, outrageous fashion, especially from her early career. She had dresses made of bubbles, meat, and large metallic cones. Throughout her entire career, Lady Gaga has been compared to David Bowie, and it is easy to see similarities between the two. They both pushed boundaries, reimagined themselves, and constantly spoke out against social norms.
Following David Bowie’s death, Lady Gaga performed a tribute for him at the 2016 Grammys. The performance received mixed reviews, some said it was too chaotic to do David Bowie justice. In a later interview, Gaga said that she feels her entire career is a ‘tribute to David Bowie’. He is definitely her biggest influence in her music and style.
