A Deeper Look
Elton John
Elton John is a singer, songwriter, and composer from Middlesex, England. He was one of the most popular entertainers during the late 1900s and he gained icon status with his over the top, elaborate costumes and high energy piano playing. John was a child piano prodigy, teaching himself how to play at the age of 4, and then at age 11 he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. Throughout his entire career, Elton John had displayed an energetic, outgoing, and impersonal sound that brought him international stardom. By 1973, he was one of the world’s best-selling pop performers and remains beloved by fans young and old all over the world.
In the beginning of their careers, Elton John and David Bowie were quite friendly, they would hang around with other musicians and go to gay clubs together, but the two grew apart and eventually started to dislike each other.
After Bowie passed away, Elton John had come out to say in an interview with Evening Standard, that “He wasn’t my cup of tea. No; I wasn’t his cup of tea.” This is referring to a comment Bowie made about John in an interview with Rolling Stone where he called Elton John, ‘rock ‘n roll’s token queen’ which means, “cheap and lowly.” This term was often used in the 70s and 80s in gay culture. Bowie would continue to make these remarks. Sir Elton believed David Bowie felt he was ‘above’ him and claims their feud was one sided. Sir Elton John still respects Bowie and holds several tributes for his legacy.
